Fitness Centre Policies

As our policies are subject to change, this page serves as a space where members can review policies and best practices for the Fitness Centre within the Tait McKenzie Centre. For general building policies, services, and more, head over to our main website by clicking the button below.

Bags & Personal Items

Concert-style or see-through bags are permitted in the fitness centre, provided they are no larger than a drawstring bag. Anything larger than permitted bags, outdoor jackets, and wet shoes must be placed in a free day locker or a purchased overnight locker in one of the changerooms.

Scanning Into The Fitness Centre

Due to there being multiple membership options with different granted access privileges, anyone entering the fitness centre is required to scan in with their YU Card, Access Card, or the barcode on the YorkU Rec App. Members are expected to bring one of these options with them into the Fitness Centre. Anyone who has signed into the building with one of these options will not be signed into the Fitness Centre by staff.

Filming

We allow members to film themselves performing exercises. However, we ask that you ensure no one is in the background of your shot, and if someone requests to stop filming, you do so. We do not allow tripods, professional cameras, or live video filming (either through video call or social media live streams) within the fitness centre. If you would like to do one of these options, you will need to contact the facility a minimum of two weeks in advance for approval.

Weight Control

To prevent damaging equipment and to decrease the risk of injury themselves or individuals using the facility around them, members are expected to control their weights in the dumbbell and machine area. Similarly, any weights added to barbells are required to be secured by clips/collars that are provided by the facility.

Safe Use Of Space

Staff may approach members to discuss use and movements that appear unsafe to the member themselves or the people around them. This includes, but is not limited to, improper use of equipment, not using safety clips/collars, using our space in barefeet, performing martial arts movements, sparring, and calisthenic movements that appear to  not be in control.

Hygiene

Members are expected to wear a minimum of socks while in the facility. It is not permitted to use machines or any part of the facility barefoot. Similarly, members need to be wearing a top and bottom at all times.

Respect

Members and staff are expected to respect one another whenever conflict arises. Any interpersonal conflict between members is first expected to be handled by the members involved before involving staff. Similarly, staff are expected to respect members when enforcing, and members are expected to listen to staff when they are requesting a member follow a policy or are providing instructions due to a safety concern.
